Ebike Motor & Controller Repair
When the motor misbehaves, most bike shops wave you off — electric drivetrains aren’t their thing. The good news: motor problems are mostly diagnosis problems. The fault is far more often a $40 sensor, a loose connector or a sticky brake lever than a $400 motor. Finding out which before you spend is the whole game.
Symptoms we assess
- Error codes flashing on your display (photograph it — that code is gold)
- Grinding, clicking, or scraping from the hub or drive unit
- Motor cuts out at speed or under load, then comes back
- Throttle dead or jumpy; pedal assist kicking in late or not at all
- Display works fine but the motor does nothing at all
What usually causes it
- Brake cutoff sensor stuck on. A lever that doesn’t fully return, or a shifted magnet, tells the controller a brake is applied — everything looks normal and the motor won’t engage. The #1 “dead motor” that isn’t.
- Loose or corroded motor connector. A pulled or wet plug at the axle gives a hum, click or twitch without rotation, often with a hall/phase error code.
- Throttle or cadence sensor failure. If only one input fails (throttle dead, assist works — or the reverse), the sensor, not the motor, is the usual cause.
- Battery sag / low-voltage cutoff. A tired pack powers the display but can’t drive the motor under load.
- Controller fault. Blown MOSFETs or water intrusion — usually after everything else is ruled out, usually with a code.
- Worn gears or bearings. Rhythmic grinding under power in a geared hub or mid-drive.
What to check first
- Set assist above 0, exit walk mode, and power on with your hands off throttle and brakes.
- Pull and release both brake levers fully; look for a brake icon on the display.
- Lift the drive wheel and test throttle and pedal assist separately — what does each do?
- Inspect the motor cable where it leaves the axle, and every main plug, for looseness or green corrosion.
- Note the exact error code and when it appears (on power-up, under load, when hot).
What a repair usually involves
Lever sensor adjustment, connector cleaning, a replacement throttle or cadence sensor, or — less often — hall sensors, a controller, or a motor. Display and controller often have to match the same brand/protocol, which is where a shop earns its fee.
