Ebike Turns On But the Motor Won't Move

A bike that powers up but will not drive is telling you something useful: the low-current side of the system is alive. The display, the lights, and the controller logic are all getting power. What is missing is either the high-current path to the motor, or the signal that tells the controller you want to go.
That narrows things considerably. If both throttle and pedal assist are dead, the fault is usually shared between them — the controller, the motor connection, the battery’s ability to deliver current under load, or a cutoff signal that is stuck on. If only one input is dead, the problem is almost always in that input’s own sensor or wiring.
Start by finding out which of those two situations you are in. It is the single most valuable piece of information for anyone who looks at the bike afterward.
Common causes
- Assist level is at zero — Many systems disable both pedal assist and throttle when the level reads 0. Some also have a display setting that turns the throttle off entirely.
- Brake cutoff sensor stuck on — Every ebike cuts motor power when a brake lever is pulled. A sticky lever, a dragging hydraulic switch, a corroded plug, or a shifted magnet makes the controller think you are braking permanently.
- Battery cannot supply current — A pack whose protection circuit has tripped on the discharge side, or one with a failed cell group, will still light the display but refuse to deliver amps. This is why a full-looking gauge does not clear the battery.
- Loose or unplugged motor connector — The fat motor plug at the hub or drive unit gets snagged, half-seated after a tire change, or corroded. Poor contact on a phase wire means no drive at all.
- Controller failure — Controllers fail from water, vibration, or a shorted phase. Frequently the display still runs because it is fed from a separate low-voltage circuit.
- Speed sensor or magnet issue — Some systems refuse to drive when they cannot read wheel speed, especially after a wheel or magnet has been moved.
- Wheel installed wrong after a flat — On hub-drive bikes, a wheel put back with the cable routed under the dropout or the connector not fully mated is a classic post-repair no-drive.
- Firmware or settings mismatch — After a display swap or a settings change, wheel size, voltage, or throttle mode can end up wrong enough that the controller never commands power.
What to check first
- Raise the assist level to 1 or higher and try again. If the motor wakes up, that was it. Note whether the level resets itself each time you power on.
- Test throttle and pedal assist separately. Both dead points at shared causes. One dead points at that input. Write down which.
- Squeeze and release both brake levers fully several times. Watch the display for a brake indicator. If a symbol stays lit with the levers released, you have found a stuck cutoff.
- Unplug one brake sensor at a time, if the connectors are accessible. On many bikes the motor runs with a brake sensor unplugged. If it does, that sensor or its cable is the fault. Reconnect it before riding.
- Read the display for an error code. Photograph anything that appears. A code narrows this problem faster than any other single clue.
- Check the motor connector. With the bike off, look at the plug near the hub or drive unit. Push it fully together, look for corrosion, and check the cable is not pinched at the dropout.
- Lift the driven wheel and spin it by hand. Free and quiet is good. Notchy, dragging, or grinding means the motor itself is a suspect.
- Recharge fully, then retry. If the motor works right after a full charge but quits later, the pack is struggling under load rather than the controller failing.
When to stop and get help
- Stop riding if the motor engages unexpectedly or does not cut out when you brake. That is a control problem, not an inconvenience.
- Any burning smell from the hub, drive unit, or controller area.
- A motor that will not turn freely by hand, or that makes grinding noise when spun.
- Melted, discolored, or water-filled connectors anywhere in the motor circuit.
- Do not bypass, unplug permanently, or tape over a brake cutoff sensor to get moving. That removes a safety feature that exists for good reason.
- Do not open the controller or change controller parameters to force output.
What a repair usually involves
A shop working this problem confirms the split first: does the controller have battery voltage under load, and is it receiving a valid go signal? They test pack voltage while the motor is commanded, check the brake cutoff lines, check throttle and pedal assist signals at the controller, then look at the motor’s phase and hall wiring.
The parts that most often come out are small: a brake cutoff sensor, a throttle, a pedal assist sensor, a damaged motor cable, or a corroded connector block. Controllers and motors do fail, but they are confirmed rather than assumed, because they are the expensive answers.
A structured assessment before that visit is mostly about capturing the pattern: which inputs are dead, whether an error code appears, what the brake indicator does, whether anything was worked on recently, and whether a full charge changes the behavior. Those answers are the difference between a technician spending twenty minutes narrowing the field and spending an hour reproducing what you already saw at home.
