Ebikes are heavier and faster than regular bikes, and they eat brake pads for breakfast. A 65-pound bike doing 28 mph needs its brakes taken seriously — worn pads on an ebike aren’t an annoyance, they’re a hazard. Ebike brakes also do a second job most riders don’t know about: the levers carry sensors that cut motor power, and when one misbehaves the motor is what seems broken.
Symptoms we assess
- Squealing or grinding when you brake
- Levers that pull to the grip, or feel spongy and vague
- Weak stopping power, especially downhill or with cargo
- Warped rotors — that rhythmic rubbing sound on every wheel rotation
- Brake sensor faults that cut motor power at the wrong time, or stop it engaging at all
What usually causes it
- Worn, glazed or contaminated pads. Squeal and weak braking with a firm lever.
- Air or a leak in a hydraulic line. A spongy lever that reaches the bar — don’t ride on this.
- Cable tension / caliper alignment on mechanical discs. Rubbing, dragging, weak bite.
- A bent rotor or loose spokes. Once-per-turn tick or scrape.
- A stuck or misaligned cutoff sensor. Lever sits slightly pulled, magnet shifted, switch damaged — motor disabled while brakes feel fine.
What to check first
- Squeeze each lever: does it snap fully back? Is there a brake icon on the display?
- Look at pad thickness through the caliper and at the rotor for scoring or an oily sheen.
- Lift the wheel and spin it — watch the pad-to-rotor gap and listen for rub.
- For hydraulics, look for fluid at the lever, along the hose and at the caliper.
- If the motor won’t engage, unplug one brake sensor connector at a time (if accessible) and retest with the wheel lifted.
What a repair usually involves
Pad replacement and caliper alignment are driveway jobs for many riders. Rotor truing, hydraulic bleeds and sensor/lever replacement are where a shop makes sense — and every brake job on a heavy bike should end with a loaded stop test.
