Charger Light Stays Green But the Battery Isn't Charging

Most ebike chargers have a two-state light: one color while current is flowing, another when it is not. Red or orange means working, green means done. The catch is that “done” and “never started” look identical to the charger, so a green light that never turns red is not proof that anything is wrong with the pack — and it is not proof that anything is right, either.

Three situations produce a stuck green light. The pack really is full. The charger is not physically connected well enough to see a load. Or the pack is refusing charge, most often because its protection circuit has shut down after a deep discharge or a fault.

Sorting between those is mostly about looking for evidence that current is flowing at all: warmth, fan noise, and any change in the pack’s own indicator.

Common causes

  1. Battery is genuinely full — Worth ruling out first. If the pack sat on the charger overnight and the bike runs normally, the green light is correct and the range concern is a different problem.
  2. Plug not fully seated — Charge ports are shallow, and a plug can look inserted while sitting a millimeter shy of contact. The charger sees nothing and reports green.
  3. Damaged charge port — A pushed-in center pin, a spread contact, or a cracked solder joint inside the port creates the same no-load condition.
  4. Protection circuit asleep after deep discharge — When a pack drains very low, it shuts itself off to protect the cells. Many chargers will not start into a pack in that state, so they show green.
  5. Protection circuit latched off after a fault — An over-current event, a short, or a cell fault can leave the pack shut down. The pack reads as no load, the charger reads as finished.
  6. Charger has failed internally — A charger can still power its LED while producing no usable output. Green with no warmth after an hour is the tell.
  7. Blown fuse in the pack or the charge path — With the circuit open, the charger has nothing to push into.
  8. Very cold or very hot pack — Temperature protection blocks charging, and depending on design the charger may just sit green until the pack is back in range.

What to check first

  1. Feel the charger after ten minutes. A working charger gets warm and often runs a fan. Cold and silent means no current.
  2. Feel the battery after thirty minutes. A charging pack warms slightly. A pack that stays exactly at room temperature is not taking charge.
  3. Press the battery’s indicator button. If it shows nothing at all, suspect a sleeping or shut-down pack. If it shows bars that never increase, current is not reaching the cells.
  4. Unplug, inspect the port, reseat firmly. Look into the port with a flashlight for a bent or pushed-in pin, debris, or corrosion. Push the plug fully home and listen for it to seat.
  5. Wiggle the plug gently while watching the LED. If it flicks to red at any angle, the port or the plug is the fault, not the cells.
  6. Try the other charging location. If your pack can charge on the bike and off it, try both. Green in one place and red in the other localizes the problem immediately.
  7. Bring the pack to room temperature and retry. Give it two hours indoors, away from anything flammable, then try again.
  8. Try a known-good charger of the same specification if you can borrow one. Red light on the borrowed charger means yours has failed.

What a repair usually involves

A shop checks the charger’s output first, then measures the pack’s resting voltage at its terminals. Those two numbers separate a dead charger from a sleeping pack from a healthy pack that was simply full, usually within a few minutes.

If the pack is shut down, the question becomes why. A one-off deep discharge sometimes recovers with a controlled, monitored restart on proper equipment. A protection circuit that shut down because of a failing cell group is a different story, and typically leads to a rebuild or replacement rather than a reset.

Common replacements are the charger, the charge port, a fuse, or the pack. Ports are frequently repairable and much cheaper than the pack, which is why it is worth proving the port before condemning anything else.

Organizing your observations before the shop visit helps more than usual with this symptom, because the useful evidence is behavioral: whether the charger warms up, whether the pack warms up, what the pack indicator does, how flat the bike was when it last ran, how long it sat, and whether the light ever flickers when the plug moves. Those details often point straight at one of the three explanations before any equipment comes out.
